Getting to know one another better is the quickest route to building community! Based on a Q&A-style interview developed by the CAAE Communications Committee, we're pleased to present this month’s spotlight of new member Kevin Berry (West Virginia), compilation courtesy of Raphe Beck (Oregon).

Name: Kevin Berry, Vice President of Alumni Relations

Institution: West Virginia University

Q: Are you new to alumni relations, new to your institution, neither, or both?

A: I’ve worked at WVU in several capacities for the last 28 years, 20 of those in alumni relations.

Q: Best perk of the job so far?

A: I’ve joined the University’s Senior Leadership Team. Many would assume that after nearly 30 years at the same institution there isn’t much more to learn. I literally learn about something new and exciting happening at WVU during every meeting.

Q: Biggest challenge so far?

A: Developing and putting needed processes in place as we strategically align with the University. That, and working with a variety of partners to figure out how to best align the alumni base with our institution’s purpose initiative.

Q: If you needed to, could you sing your school’s fight song and/or alma mater?

A: Yes, and Country Road too!

Q: What would it surprise people to know about you?

A: I’m probably the only person you will ever meet that got a concussion flying a kite. I’m happy to share the story at a future CAAE meeting.

Q: Who would be your dream dinner guest?

A: Abraham Lincoln.

Q: When I’m not on the job, you’ll find me ... :

A: Attending a baseball game. I love the sport and try to regularly catch high school, WVU and professional games. Standing over my BBQ pit. There is no better way to spend an afternoon than making BBQ on my offset smoker. Playing the Bimini Ring Toss game, an addiction since college. And, reading about leadership. A few of my favorites are Lincoln on Leadership, Team of Rivals, Start with Why, Essentialism, Leadership in Turbulent Times, Ego is the Enemy and The Wisdom of Crowds.
