Based on a Q&A-style interview developed by the CAAE Communications Committee, we're pleased to present this month’s spotlight of CAAE member William Pierce (University of Toledo Foundation), compilation courtesy of Raphe Beck (University of Oregon).

Name: William Pierce

Institution: University of Toledo Foundation

Q: Are you new to alumni relations, new to your institution, neither, or both?

A: I have earned two degrees from The University of Toledo and have spent twenty-two years of my twenty-five-year career at my alma mater.  The first twenty years were spent in enrollment management while the last five years have been in alumni relations.  I was brand new to advancement when I started in February 2019.

Q: Best perk of the job so far:

A: It’s hard to narrow it down to one because countless perks come with the work we do.  However, interacting with alumni who share my passion for the success of our alma mater has truly been a joy.

Q: Biggest challenge so far:

A: Striking a balance between tradition and innovation while meeting the needs of a diverse population of alumni and donors.

Q: If you needed to, could you sing your school’s fight song and/or alma mater?

A: Yes, but please do not ask me to sing because it’s not a talent I was blessed to receive.

Q: What would it surprise people to know about you?

A: In a career field where we are expected to be outgoing and always ready to interact with people, I truly enjoy my quiet time.  I’d stop short of calling myself a complete introvert but quiet time to reflect and recharge is a must for me.

Q: Who would be your dream dinner guests?

A: It’s a toss-up between the Obamas and Michael Jordan.

Q: When I’m not on the job, you’ll find me…

A: Reading, spending time with family, tending to my yard because it has to be the best on the block (competitiveness never subsides), and watching football (or wishing it was football season).
